AbstractReliable environmental and climatic data are necessary to evaluate the solar and aeolic energy availability. Such evaluation will make possible the development of the sector of renewable energy resource assessment. The objective of this work is to study the behavior of the incident solar radiation in the central part of Rio Grande do Sul state - Brazil. To perform this study, the incident solar radiation data obtained by a reference station of the SONDA Project were used. This station is installed at the Southern Space Observatory (Observatório Espacial do Sul OES/CRSPE/INPE MCT), located in São Martinho da Serra RS Brazil. The station is equipped with a Normal Incidence Pyrheliometer NIP (Eppley Laboratory, Inc) for direct solar radiation measurements, a CM22 Pyranomiter (Kipp & Zonen) coupled to a 2APBD Solar Tracker (Kipp & Zonen) with a solar occulting disk for diffuse solar radiation measurements, and a CM 21 Pyrhanometer (Kipp & Zonen) for global radiation measurements. The period of data used was from August 2004 to March 2005, and only measurements performed in cloudless days were used. A similar behavior was observed for the direct, diffuse and global radiation, with an increasing trend from August to December, a maximum between the second half of December and first half of January, and a subsequent decreasing trend. In a previous study, the percentages of diffuse and direct radiation were calculated for the same period and the results have shown that 10.03% of the incident solar radiation was diffuse and 89.97% direct.
